Welcome to the launch of the new Electronic Failure Device Analysis Society Online Community!  This community is more than a static web page to look up data, it’s an interactive world of electronic device failure analysis professionals who share information, ideas and solutions. Please take the time to explore all our society has to offer. You don’t need to be a EDFAS specialist to use the Community, as long as you have an interest in the industry, the technology or a desire to help others!

 Welcome

The Electronic Device Failure Analysis Society (EDFAS) fosters education and communication in the failure analysis community, working for technology advancement and the improved performance and reliability of devices and materials for the electronic industry. Failure analysis and prevention are important functions to all of the engineering disciplines. The materials engineer often plays a lead role in the analysis of failures, whether a component or product fails in service or if failure occurs in manufacturing or during production processing. In any case, one must determine the cause of failure to prevent future occurrence, and/or to improve the performance of the device, component or structure.

 EDFAS Member Update

This week’s International Symposium for Testing and Failure Analysis (ISTFA) in Portland marks a significant milestone: the 10th anniversary of the Electronic Device Failure Analysis Society (EDFAS).

“In August 1998, Ed Cole, Shekhar Khandekar, and Larry Wagner met with ASM in Cleveland to discuss the formation of a professional society to support the growing electronics failure analysis community,” said EDFAS President Tracy Myers. “They set an aggressive goal of rolling out EDFAS as an affiliate society of ASM at ISTFA a little more than three months away.”

EDFAS and ASM Past President Larry Wagner remembered the first weeks of the society’s existence. “We were going to be a society of over 400 members in very short order,” he said. “However, we looked far beyond that quick spurt of membership to how we would provide long-term value to our members. This was essential for maintaining and expanding beyond members who attended ISTFA….With over 1,700 members this year, it appears that we have succeeded in providing a solid value platform.”

One of the most valued benefits of EDFAS membership is the successful EDFA magazine, which coincidentally is also celebrating its 10th anniversary. “Back in 1998, EDFA started as a newsletter,” said editor Rose Ring. “But in recent years, EDFA has grown to become a leading technical resource for the Failure Analysis engineer.” Congratulations to all EDFAS members on the success of their society!
